Leisure: You'll Never Be Bored in Hamarøy

In Hábmer-Hamarøy, there’s always something to do and someone to do it with! Get involved in volunteering or join a local team or club that suits you. Work out at modern fitness centers, climb the highest indoor climbing wall in Northern Norway in Hamarøyhallen, or enjoy a swim at the pools in Drag or Innhavet. Savor the day’s lunch or dinner at Camp Hamarøy, Kafè Sult, or Markens Grøde Spiseri. Watch high-definition movies at the local cinema in Drag or Hamsunsenteret, or through Veten film club. In addition, there’s plenty happening at the libraries in Oppeid and Drag. Seasons in Hamarøy

Spring
Hamarøy's villages awaken with brighter days, sunshine, cycling, and the scent of spring. The melting snow and changing weather highlight pristine sandy beaches, inviting boat life and visits from those seeing us for the first time since last year, spreading optimism.
Summer
Summers in Hamarøy are filled with sunshine and warmth, bustling festivals, markets, and plenty of visitors! Salmon fishing, kayaking, mountain hikes, and the idyllic Nordland summer days are fully enjoyed, bringing everything to life.
Autumn
Autumn in Hamarøy is a time for hunting, fishing, and foraging, enjoyed in the crisp air and vibrant colors. Outdoor campfire coffee sessions are common, while indoors, lit candles and a glass of wine complement the atmosphere. The village quiets down after the summer buzz, and the start of the school year marks new beginnings. Autumn here is meaningful and rich.
Winter
Winter in Hamarøy can be challenging with polar nights and snowstorms, but there are magical daily moments to be enjoyed, such as skiing under the aurora borealis on top-notch ski trails. Indoor climbing on Northern Norway's highest wall, spa visits, spinning, or other sports activities might be equally appealing. Cultural productions and the gradually lighter days lighten the spirit and renew energy.

In beautiful Nordland

Hamarøy Municipality, in Lule Sami Hábmera suohkan, is located in the northern part of Nordland county, with more than 2,700 residents. The municipality spans 2,812 km², with 2,013 km² of land and 799 km² of sea area, bordering Narvik and Sweden to the northeast and Sørfold and Steigen to the southwest. The coastline is deeply indented with fjords, peninsulas, and islands, while the highest mountains border Narvik and Sørfold, including Bjørntoppen (1,520 meters above sea level) and Gasskatjåhkkå (1,517 meters above sea level).

With almost endless possibilities to explore nature from the peaks to the shores, and over 90 registered clubs and associations, we definitely have something for everyone! We boast great facilities like a sports hall and swimming pools, with modest fees in sports. This way, we aim to make offerings accessible. Moreover, we probably have the world’s best culture school – Kulturskole, where about half of all children in the municipality are members, which gives them the opportunity to express themselves creatively.

With kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, as well as the Lule Sami-speaking kindergarten Viejega and a Montessori school, a diverse range of educational opportunities are available in Hamarøy.

Our Lule Sámi Heritage

Hábmera suohkan – Hamarøy Municipality is Norway’s only municipality with the status of a Lule Sami language administration municipality. This status entails an extraordinary responsibility to preserve and strengthen the Lule Sami language and culture – a commitment that is a high priority across all municipal sectors. Árran Lule Sami Center plays a pivotal role as a Lule Sami institution within the municipality. It employs 11 staff members daily within the foundation, and it also rents office spaces to entities like the Sami Parliament, NRK Sápmi, Statped, Nord University, and Sámi Allaskuvla Sami University College. The center also features exhibitions, a museum, and engaging cultural and academic content.

Hamarøy is a cultural gem of a municipality, and we stand out! In 2022, we ranked 4th on Norway's cultural index, consistently delivering excellent figures to this index over time. More than half of all school pupils are members of a culture school brimming with offerings, we have high library loan figures, and the visitation numbers to museums and galleries are impressive.

We can't overlook mentioning Hamsunsenteret, an architectural masterpiece, where you can deep dive into the life and work of Nobel Prize winner Knut Hamsun. You can experience a unique cultural environment all year round! How about an intriguing lecture, architectural walk, reading, concert, or a performance in Æventyrsalen? And if you get hungry before, during, or afterwards: Try the specialty waffle with Arctic char or cured ham at Kafè Sult! Æventyrsalen at Hamsunsenteret hosts numerous cultural productions throughout the year, including theater plays, concerts, and movie screenings organized by Veten film club and Hamsunsenteret.
